Vera J. Lipton, PhD

IP and Technology Associate

An Australian-qualified intellectual property (IP) counsel, mediator and digital innovation advocate, Vera advises clients on various aspects of law and information technology, IP protection and commercialisation, artificial intelligence, privacy and data/information protection and use, licensing/franchising issues and IP enforcement.

Her expertise includes aligning business and IP strategies, IP/IT due diligence and audits, data protection and privacy, advising on patentability, data and branding issues. These matters include cross-jurisdictional transactions in e-commerce, setting up an IP holding company, and advising on tax-related aspects of intellectual property.

Before moving to Cyprus, Vera had an extensive career with the Australian Government’s IP office. She was the founding manager of IP Australia’s National IP Analytics Hub — a finalist of the 2016 Institute of Public Administration Australia Award for Excellence in Public Sector Innovation. Vera’s earlier career was in international technology transfer and medical software commercialisation.

Vera’s academic research centres on the ethical, legal, social and managerial aspects of artificial intelligence and big data. Her book Open Scientific Data: Why Choosing and Reusing the Right Data Matters (2020, Intech Open) is available, fittingly, with open access.

Vera graduated with an MA (International Relations) from the Australian National University in Canberra, has an MIP (Law) degree from UTS in Sydney, and a PhD from the Thomas More Law School at the ACU in Melbourne. She holds current registrations as a Certified Licensing Professional (CLP) Emerita in the US, as a Certified Patent Valuation Analyst (CPVA) also in the US, and as a trademark attorney in the European Union.
